What are Dermal Fillers?

Many people use “dermal fillers” as though it’s synonymous with “BOTOX,” but they’re actually different treatments that address separate underlying issues. While BOTOX helps relax muscles and reduce fine lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers help restore lost collagen to create more volume in the face. While this can also improve the appearance of deep wrinkles or scars, that’s an added perk and not the primary use of this treatment.
Dermal filler injections are typically made of a few organic and inorganic ingredients, which are all relatively safe. These include hyaluronic acid, which is naturally present in the skin, agents that help the product maintain its gel-like consistency to make it last longer under the skin, lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic, and other additives.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

The process of getting dermal fillers is quick, non-invasive, and poses little-to-no serious side-effects. Our team will consult with you to learn the areas of your face that you want to improve the appearance of. Based on the consultation, we can then plan where we’ll inject the dermal fillers and how many you’ll need. After they are injected beneath the skin, they’ll provide a natural-looking plumping effect to restore the volume that has decreased due to collagen breakdown.
Dermal Filler FAQs
What type of dermal fillers do you use?
We use different brands of dermal fillers, including Juvéderm Ultra XC, Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC, and Revanesse Versa+.
How do dermal fillers compare to BOTOX® and Xeomin®?
Dermal fillers and BOTOX and Xeomin offer different results and are different treatments, although they’re often used synonymously, which isn’t accurate. The primary purpose of fillers is to restore volume lost by collagen, while BOTOX and Xeomin employ botulinum toxin to help relax muscles and release facial wrinkles and fine lines. They can be used together to achieve more comprehensive aesthetic results.
How long do fillers last?
Most dermal filler results last for between six to 18 months, depending on the treatment area and the type of filler you receive. Patients who wish to keep up with their results should schedule routine touch-up visits every six to eight months to maintain their results.
What are the risks of dermal fillers?
The side effects of getting dermal fillers are all relatively minimal, ranging from redness and bruising to swelling. Although incredibly rare, it’s also possible for an infection to occur at the injection site.
Are dermal filler injections painful?
No! Dermal filler injections contain lidocaine, which is an anesthetic agent, to minimize your discomfort after the procedure. The needle used to administer the filler is also very thin, so many of our patients only experience a slight stinging sensation for a moment before it’s over. If you’re very uncomfortable or nervous about receiving fillers, our team can administer anesthetic to the area to numb it beforehand.
